Movie Monday #14 – British Film is Back

Mondays aren’t just for movies. With the start of another working week comes the Monday blues: that sinking return to the 5 day grind after 48 hours of freedom. With the onslaught of Winter, daylight is shrinking. For the next few months, most of us will barely see the light at all throughout our working week. Sub-zero temperatures are forecast, the EU is squabbling and senior citizens can no longer ride the National Express for a 1/3 off. As usual, us Brits don’t have a whole lot to be cheerful for right now.

But when it comes to cinema, we do. With hushed excitement I dare to utter the following 4 words: British film is in.

Movie Monday #11 – Tyrannosaur Shows the True Meaning of Melancholia

It’s been a dark time in the realms of this month’s new releases. Last week saw Lars Von Trier and Melancholia, with Cannes’ best actress Kirsten Dunst as Justine, a disconnected bride on the cusp of apocalypse, who doesn’t fear it, for she feels she has nothing to exist for.

This weekend, we saw a wholly different delve into the human condition. Tyrannosaur hit cinemas this Friday. Paddy Considine, the right hand man of one of our starriest British contemporaries, Shane Meadows, presents a character study of anger, trauma and domestic abuse in a ‘nondescript Midlands town’.
